sometimes Internet is quite difficult to access by Indonesian College Students

You know what?
When I want to comment on one of the posting in subject:

"How Do People use technology fot language learning"
posted by Teaching Learning English with ICT blog, in May 2, 2011,

I have do it repeat and repeat again continuously. I have done it for more than 50 times already, and still, I can not entering my comment on that blog. I don't know why this is happened to me. then, I asked some friends about it and they say,"we have the same problem!". But I never give up. I'm still continuing to enter my comment although it's never give me a good chance. So, in this posting, I want to include my comment In Teaching Learning English with ICT's blog, if there are no chance to me to enter my comment in the real blog actually. Here it is.

well, I think youtube is one of the most useful website in our teaching learning process (if we use it correctly). I give several examples that are showing us that youtube is important, especially for us who learn English as second languages. Youtube give us chances to be able to doing communicate with foreign people. besides that, by using youtube video, we can found a lot of video that are very useful. I have some experiences for that. for example, when I want to see the debating video for Academic debate contest in America, I just have to go to visit this website and I found many of the videos. oh, I remember the time when I want to search some videos in 'making a cup of coffee' that is I want use to support my delivery lesson plan in TEFL class, I download it from youtube, too. when we get confuse about how to pronounce the vowels, consonants, and diphthongs in English spelling in phonology class, we can use this website to download or just see the videos how the native speaker speak in English fluently. I think we all are already use the youtube also in order to promote our blogs to the others. Now I want to introduce a website that is very useful for us, too.

http://www.mylot.com

have you ever been go to this web address above before? it is a kind of social network that is very interesting. in this web, we can share our ideas and our problem solving, of course our education need as well. this web also give us a chance to earn money by ourselves. it is quite easy. we just start our own discussion or comment in to others discussion/posting, then we can earn money (dollars). I am already a member of it, but I don't want the money actually, I just want to improve English skill (because everything in this web is in English) and share my ideas with others. we can post anything, but based on the type of the posting. In this website, there are many type of discussion that are we can share with. for example, education, school, English, food, campus, travel, student, reading, listening, writing, speaking, health, love, music, movies, sports, and many more. they are all in interest's group. So, what you're waiting, just join to this group and enjoy the discussion...

I give this example of one of the problems about the difficulties in accessing internet for Indonesian people. Someone told me that it is because of the limited bandwidth that are Indonesian have. Someone else told me also that it is because of the signal of my CDMA are very slow to be gotten by my modem. I still do not know why...

Mr.Cary, who is one of the foreign lecturer in FKIP UNTAN Pontianak, from Alabama, said that "Indonesia can be more successful compare to the other countries including America, Japan, China, and others, if the government increase the limit of internet bandwidth, because there are many Indonesian people that are very smart and diligent. Indonesian people have to know more knowledge outside."

I think it is because ICT is very important for us, nowadays.

FUN ACTIVITIES AMONG THE COLLEGE STUDENTS

When in college, you may have many frustrated assignments that are make you crazy. I feel that feelings, too. It is very common for students to get overwhelmed. From the cost of just college in general to all the work it takes to succeed it is easy to understand where the stress comes from. When a college student you need to make sure you have time for school but also for your life outside of school. Between working a job and going to school there is little time to do the things you enjoy. Although it is hard to find time for a social life and fun activities it is important to set your schedule around having fun as well. For good health you need to get out of the house, have fun and live a little. Being stressed out over college is no way to live. Since you’re probably not used to getting out or having a lot of fun you may need some ideas for fun activities. Read below for ideas on how to have fun as a college student.

Be a kid again

What did you like to do as a kid? Whether you liked to play a sport, draw or play video games those were what you loved. Why not pick them back up again? Yes, it can be very hard to find time but what is a half hour of your day to have fun and enjoy life for a while?

Go up town

Get some friends together and hang out up town. Try spending a nice night walking around town, grabbing a bite to eat and maybe go out for ice cream later. Get some fresh air and enjoy the places around you besides your college campus. For example, you and your friend can go to Ayani Mega Mall or Korem for refreshing your mind.

Call up your friends

Plan a day with your friends to hang out later in the week. This will give you something to look forward to throughout the week. Spending time with friends is a good way to relieve stress by telling your friends what’s on your mind and enjoying yourself. Usually, I call my friend to go to the karaoke once a month. Lol.

Game night

There is nothing more fun than a game night with your best friends. Get some friends together and plan for a day to play some board games. Board games are played by little kids to senior adults because they are fun and never get old. Or you can have a pajama’s party with your girlfriends, if you yourself are a girl, too. Hohohooo..

Watching Movie

I love watching movies, and my friend love watching korean movies. Humm… whether you have some friends over or you go out to the movies take some time to kick back and watch a good movie. It’s nice to just relax and spend some time watching your favorite movies.

As a college student it is important to still have some fun once and a while. You want to avoid being couped up in the house all the time. For good health it is important to enjoy life and get out and have fun once and a while. Consider some of the ideas above and see how you can make your week more fun! But still remember that you have the duties as the student. Okay…??

THE STUDENT'S DUTIES IN COLLEGE

As the students in a faculty, we have many duties that we have to do. Not only the students have to do the duties as the students in college, but the teachers or the lectures as well. The duties of a student, from my perspective, are very much. They are:

1. To buy the book or other required materials and bring them to class, if asked.

2. To do all readings and assignments by the time they are required.

3. To be present in class and ready to listen, participate, and learn.

4. To avoid noise, smells, and other things which are might distract other students.

5. To read the syllabus and ensure that s/he understands what is expected of him/her.

6. To put aside sufficient time to study, including extra time for exams, projects, and papers.

7. To cooperate with team members on group projects, taking responsibility for doing her/his share.

8. To keep copies of all returned assignments as evidence that they were submitted and graded in order to make them easier when they got trouble technique with the teacher about their scores.

9. To be honest and ethical in the completion of classwork, avoiding plagiarism or other forms of academic dishonesty.

10. To listen to and accept that others (the teacher/lecturer or other students) may have opinions and/or reactions different from those which s/he may have.

11. To participate in class appropriately, neither sitting in stony silence throughout the course, nor talking constantly.

12. To keep all discussion and work civil, avoiding profanity or other rudeness or offensive comments.

13. To inform the teacher/lecturer immediately if an emergency prevents the completion of an exam, paper, or other assignment as scheduled.

14. To accept the consequences of his/her own mistakes and not try to argue the teacher/lecturer out of them (as when missed homework results in a grade reduction).

15. To accept the grade assigned, as long as it is without calculation errors and meets the criteria set out in the syllabus.

Now, what about the duties of teacher/lecturer as an educator? What do you think, if you see that there are several lecturer/teacher who are often absent during the class meeting in a semester? Yeah… as we know that we as the students have to learn autonomously, but still, we need a guider or facilitator in order to make us in line with the syllabus. What do you think…??

TIME MANAGEMENT IN STUDYING AS COLLEGE STUDENTS

Many college students like us have to learn very quickly the value of our time when we are struggling to campus and a social life. With so much to do it can be easy to become overwhelmed, stressed and eventually burnt out. We can help ourselves stay sane and still get everything done by developing good time management skills early on.

While you may not have that many hours of classes each week, you still have to account for the time you’ll need to spend studying for them. Here are some tips on how you can fit your study time into your schedule.

1. Take advantage of downtime.

If you take a long time to play games or just watching TV program, why not use it to get a little studying in? The less time you waste during downtime, the more time you’ll have later.

2. Set goals.

It can be hard to get motivated to study when you don’t have a clear goal in mind. Set a goal of how much you want to get done and try your best to meet it. For example, you’ll go to the Pasir Panjang beach for 3 days if you pass the subject.

3. Use the syllabus.

Although in English Study Program the syllabus is not too much give the influences in the teaching learning process in FKIP, but your syllabus will let you know when and how fast you’ll be covering topics in your class. You can use it to get ahead when you have extra time or to know when and what you’ll need to work on each day to keep up.

4. Work to boost your memory.

You’ll spend much less time studying if you can remember what you study the first time around. Easier said than done, however, but you can play games, read books and eat foods that will help keep you at your maximum memory potential. I often do those things actually. Hehehheee…

5. Learn what works for you.

Different methods work better for different people. If you’re struggling with a certain way you’ve been studying, try something else.

6. Study difficult subjects first.

There’s no sense in putting off the worst for last — it will only encourage you to procrastinate and get less done in the long run. Get the hard stuff out of the way and you’ll have a much happier rest of the day. Just like an Indonesian quotations :
“Berakit-rakit ke tepi hulu, berenang-renang kemudian. Bersakit-sakit dahulu, bersenang-senang kemudian.”

7. Work in short blocks with breaks.

You won’t be doing yourself any favors by pulling marathon study sessions with no breaks. Studies have shown that the most effective way to get through material is to go through it in smaller sessions and to give your mind and eyes time to rest in between with short breaks.

8. Team up with classmates.

There’s no need to study alone if you can get more out of working with your classmates. Sometimes collaboration can be a much faster way to get through material, and it can be a great help if you’re struggling with certain concepts. Just make sure your study sessions don’t get too off track. For example, you make a study group with your friends. You can study everywhere that you like.

9. Avoid skipping class.

While everyone skips a class now and again to catch up on sleep or to get other things done they feel are more pressing, try not to make a habit of it. Going to class will make it easier for you to keep up with the material and will give you the chance to ask questions.

10. Create a strategy.

You’ll get the most out of your study time if you go into it with a strategy in mind. Focus on certain subjects first or spend a little extra time on topics that you struggle with. Whatever you do, make sure it works for you and makes the most of your time.

Surviving Your First Day at Campus

Soon the new students will start classes.College students certainly different from the high school student. In particular, a more demanding way of learning activeness and independence. This to you who just bearing the title of student. There are some important things you need to know.

Achievement in the Early Semester

Brilliant achievement that will be the first step is good for you for next semester-semester. Remember, the number of courses that can be taken one student in each semester depending on student achievement index in the previous semester. In addition, these achievements would ignite your spirit to continue to excel at the next half-semester.

Selectively Selecting Friends

Friend is also one important factor. Independence in college made a fellow student relationships tend to be individualistic. Moreover, if the lecture that followed rarely or do not require cooperation and group cohesiveness.

Friend needed to learn, discuss, work assignments, or get information. Choose friends who fit in and can support your learning achievement because a friend gave considerable influence.

Establish Good Relations with Senior

Senior is also important for you to recognize. Be polite so that we can establish relationship well. They will be more sympathetic if you can appreciate them. You also can easily borrow the book and lecture material. In addition, information about courses, professors, and others also can ask your senior.

Utilizing Library

Nothing to lose if you frequently visit the library. As we know, library is information science warehouse. Especially if you can borrow textbooks from there.

Be Active Students
Being a student, certainly not the same as a student. Do not just pass through the same route every day: home--school-cafeteria-house again.

Many campus activities that you can follow. Starting from journalistic activities, arts, sports, photography, nature lovers, theater, scouts, etc.. Select the appropriate organization and match the interests and talents. Even better if it can support your studies organization.

By association, you can develop skills and deliver your ideas in every activity. Furthermore, you will have the managerial capability and skills in specific areas of a time of need when you've jumped into the community.

Manage your time
In college, you will be free and independent. For that, you yourself who will manage your studies alone. Want fast or slow? However, one should remember is that every state university has a maximum time limit of study. So clever-pandailah set the time between lectures with other activities.

Set the time when you eat, when to learn, when to rest, when to exercise, etc.. After you set, then do with discipline.

Read the Information

Information is very important for a student. Whether it's college information, campus activities, scholarship, and others. Sometimes, there are professors who cancel or change class schedules without giving notice directly to students. So, frequently read the announcement, or seek information from friends so as not to miss the news.

Keep your motivation

Motivation to learn remains to be preserved. There are students who have confidence that he will fail through a particular course, though he has not tried it. To achieve good achievement, you must set motivation and strong belief in yourself that you can follow the lectures.

There are also other cases, there are students who are too fond of his organization until his college negligent. All you have to remember is your main goal is college. Do not disappointed your parents by giving a bad performance lecture. But show that you can succeed in college without having obstructed organize.

Stay Healthy

Maintaining health is very important for you because it really affects the health of academic achievement. Health problems will cause a further decline in learning ability to make achievements slump. Even worse can derail your studies in the middle of the road.

Well, friends, enjoy your new experience. Hopefully it helpful for you.

How to deal with final examination

Friends , do you ever feel stress during final exams? I also often feel it, but I have some tips for dealing with them. I hope the following tips useful for you.
1. Avoid stressful people.

Stress actually is contagious. During exam week, resist the urge to have a study session with your super-tense friend, especially if she’s complaining about all the work she has to do and breaking pencils all over the place. Her stress will only add to your stress.

2. Eat healthy and exercise.

This seems like a no-brainer, but it’s a wonder how many people forget it. Skip the sugar, which will make you crash, and go for snacks like granola bars, healthy cereal or fruits and veggies to keep your blood sugar stable. If you’re studying for a long period of time, eat some protein too. Also, try to get some form of exercise. Even a 10 minute walk will leave you calmer and more focused.

3. Just say NO.

I don’t mean to drugs, although I’m not recommending them or anything. What you need to say no to are the people who want to take up your time. There will probably be a friend who needs to talk to you for hours about her life, or a keg party the night before your final, and if you say yes, you’ll probably be tempted to blow off studying. Resist the urge. Say no to the distractions and be selfish for a day. You want a good GPA, right?

4. Force yourself to take breaks.

For every hour or so that you work, take a 10 or 15 minute break. Let yourself do whatever you want (check Facebook, check out that guy sitting nearby, stare off into space, call a friend, etc.) for those 10-15 mins, then start working again. This gives your brain a little rest and will help keep you more focused when you are actually doing work.

5. Visualize it all going right.

This is actually my favorite tip of all, even though it sounds kind of nuts. Imagine yourself taking the test and feeling confident that you know all the information. Picture getting all of the answers right, and focus on how relaxed you feel. Then picture the A on your test paper. When you imagine a happy ending, that’s often what happens, because you make the decisions that lead to it without even realizing.

6. If you’ve studied all you can, get up your confidence!

When test-time rolls around, it’s time to get yourself into confidence mode. You’ve prepared as much as you could, and now it’s time to ace the test. The tip here is to do whatever works to convince yourself you are going to do really well. Again, I know this tip sounds a little crazy but you just have to try it for yourself. I think you’ll like the results.

Registration of new students at UNTAN

Registration of new students at the University of Tanjungpura increases this year. There were 9092 applicants on the 24th of May , whereas the applicants will be accepted only 2292 people.
Increasing number of applicants this year because there are no tests through SELOK(local selection), other than that the percentage of high school graduation also influential.

Starting this year Untan try to apply the online system for registration of new students. This is done to prevent applicants from all brokers and facilitate the applicants themselves. But this system was quite difficult for some people, especially for those who are not accustomed to using the internet. Untan party itself has a post to help this online registration system. Online registration system is expected to be increasingly going well for next year and people are more able to adapt to the Internet so that this process will go more smoothly.

Cheating is true?

Since we are students in campus, we have to consider that we should have great learning skills, but there is one important thing that can be remembered, it is learn autonomously. We should believe in our mind that we can learn by ourselves, and we should believe that we can remember the materials in our learning with our own skills without being helped by other people. In this case, we learn autonomously and our teacher is just a guider or facilitator for us. By learning autonomously, it is easier for us to remember all the materials which have been learned before. For example, when we take an examination, we can remember our own learning easily instead of just make a cheat paper and then we look at it for answer the exam’s questions.

By the way, when we talk about examination, we also talk about how to cheat during the examination, right? Okay… be honest please…

Actually, as we know so far, cheating is very not allowed in all of the examinations whatever and whenever they are. But still, there are many students who are using this way to get high score in the final result easily without being busy by reading many boring textbooks. They think that cheating is true.

Do you know what their reasons for keep cheating in the examination are? Okay, here they are:

1.Cheating is a shortcut to get high score

It is a fact that the students in all schools or universities want to get good results from their study. They will do many things to get them. But, there are still many students who will do a shortcut to get high score. Yes, many of them have possibility to get the high score, but no one can get good results because they aren’t study so that they don’t get any knowledge for their study. In the future, they will have nothing. Remember that good result is when we can applying it in our daily activities.

2.Cheating is a teamwork

Many of students who doing the cheating say that cheating is teamwork. Why? Because when they are cheating in classroom during the exam, it will be coordination between one student to another students. For example, there is one student who opens the cheat paper, and then there are some students who keep watching the teacher movement in front of class, then that answers sheet which fills of answers will move around the class. Oh my God….

3.Cheating is a challenge

When the students do the cheating, they need a big bravery to do that. It is what they called, challenge. They need bravery to hide and open the cheat paper without being seen by the teacher who keeps on eyes for them. Besides that, they dare to communicate each other when the class is silent. I don’t know how to do that because I always nervous when I want to do that, so I decided to do all my works by myself. Heheheee…

4.Cheating is funny
Well, some students say that cheating is funny. It is because when they come out from exam’s room, and they success in cheating, they will laugh aloud and feel satisfy with that. It is wrong. Yea… actually it is very wrong, but you can believe or not, there are many students who do that such a thing.

Okay, those four mentioned things are the wrong thinks. Actually, those who do cheating are uneducated students, because they don’t learn autonomously. They are not believed in their own ability to answer the questions during the examination. Of course, whatever the score that they’ve got, they have nothing.

Campus facilities influence students’ activities

Nowadays, there are a lot of facilities which can be used whether by students or teachers in campus. For example, they are learning and teaching facilities such as infocus, WIFI, language lab, the comforting classroom, and many more. For sport facilities, there are climb, basketball court, badminton court, volleyball court, and also the jogging track in around of the university. Those facilities influence the students’ activities in campus. Would you please to see that?
Let us to check those out …

As we know, most of the processes of our teaching learning in campus are discussion. Whatever the subjects, for example, in semester 4, they are Academic Debate and Discussion, Belajar dan Pembelajaran, ELT Curriculum 2, Essay Writing 2, TL by ICT, Morphology, Sociolinguistic, and many others.

Those mentioned subjects need some facilities for supporting their teaching learning progress, such as infocus which used by the teachers when they want their students to see the materials or whatever that they want to share with their students clearly. Infocus also used by the students who have a presentation when they want to explain their ideas about particular materials on certain subject during the classroom activity.

Without infocus, it is quite difficult to see the materials which have some visual movements or clear pictures that can’t be drown by the teachers or the students. It takes much time if the teachers have to draw their materials on the whiteboard first, and you know what? Sometimes the imitate picture on the whiteboard is not better than the real picture actually, isn’t it?
Okay, now we are a bit fortunate to have those things in every classroom in our campus.

Besides that, we have free WIFI, too.
Well, it is one of the precious thing in our campus, because we have to have unlimited access to see the whole world easily. WIFI is used when the students and teachers or whoever in around the campus want to browse, surf, or download something that very useful to them. But unfortunately, we only have little bandwich to access to internet, so sometimes, it is quite difficult to access to the internet when there are many users who activate their wireless and then connect their computer to the internet by using WIFI. Then, it is more unfortunately, when we want to browse something on the internet which very needed to our teaching learning needs while the others use that WIFI just to have fun with their friends such as chatting through Facebook or YM. It influences the access progress; it takes much time to load from one window to the other window in internet, and it is very bothering. Not only those, when the teachers teach in the classroom, there are many students turn on their laptop and connect to the internet. They pretense in listening to what the teachers’ say, but actually, they have fun with their own chat screen. It is happening in our campus today. So, students prefer this activity than listening to the teachers. Oww.. It’s totally poor..

Okay, I think those two things are enough to be the example of facilities that can influence the students’ activity in our campus today. For the rest, we can discuss those later, insyaAllah.

How to prepare midterm test?

Midterms! Midterms! We have our midterms test starting this Monday and we are getting REALLY stressed out about them. I feel like I'm just going to fail because they're huge tests. I don't know how to deal with it because I go into the exam thinking that I'll fail. But I had read article about how to prepare midterm test and now I will share it to you.

1.Time management. Plan, plan, plan. Before finals begin, get out your calendar and schedule as much of your finals week as possible. Then stick with the schedule.
2.Schedule in study breaks. Don't plan to study non-stop for the next five days. You'll go insane, and you'll be too fried to do well on the exams. When you write your schedule, include short study breaks to help you recharge. You'll feel so much better and will be able to concentrate so much more.
3.Exercise. There's no better source for stress relief. Just don't overdo it to the point that you're procrastinating heavily. Go for short, stress-relieving activities, like racquetball or a treadmill run. And don't underestimate the value of a brisk walk.
4.Prioritize. You have limited time to study and will have to choose what to spend the most time with. You could spend hours and hours on that math exam because if you do really well, you might be able to pull of a C. Or you can spend hours and hours on a history exam because if you do well, you've got a good shot at an A. It's up to you.
5.Form effective study groups. Just don't waste your time with lousy ones.
6.Keep things in perspective. What's the worst thing that can happen if you don't do well on this test? Excessive stress will make you crazy and hurt your performance on tests, so as much as you can, relax. And if you're having serious problems with anxiety during final exams, seek help at your school's counseling center.
I hope this study tips can help us to prepare the midterm test, let’s do the best!

FKIP = FAVORITE??

Every year Tanjungpura University hold registration for new students. As the only one state university in West Borneo,Tanjungpura University much in demand by high school graduates from all regions in west Borneo. Even some applicants are from outside Borneo, such as Riau, Natuna and Java. Almost every year the favorite faculty is teacher training and education faculty, most in the majors who are interested are PGSD, English and sociology departments. Why do they tend to choose majors in teacher training and education faculty rather than forestry faculty and agriculture?
I as one of the applicants who compete at the teachers training and education before, which is on my mind are:
1. wider employment opportunities.
as we know the number of teachers in Indonesia is still lacking. Especially in isolated areas, therefore, when I've graduated I'll be easier to find a job.
2. as a public servant has a guaranteed future.

maybe this way of thinking should be changed, because being a teacher is not just about money but about how to educate the next generation. Also the government should improve the educational system and economy.
Government should develop agriculture and forestry sectors. Both sectors are considered potentially to be developed for more than 60 percent of poor people in rural areas. Village itself is identical to the agriculture and plantation. so the graduates from agriculture and forestry faculty can work easily .

1. When there is no lecturer, we often do the exercises or assignments or just read the books which is related to the subject. This is very common activity that we will do if the lecturer is not coming to the class.

or..

2. We go online, and then we browse something new. Whatever it is; academic articles, knowledges, entertainments, or the other things that we interested in. We will read and then discuss with friends.

or..

3. We watch a film. There are a lot of films which can be watched, but usually we just watch the entertain films in order to refresh our mind.

4. We listen to the music or go online in to the facebook and chat with friends. Most of students in class will do this thing if they get bored just because waiting for the lecturer's coming.

And the last one is..

5. We go to the library, we can borrow some books, then we read the books in the class while wait for the next subject meeting.
Unfortunately, for this activity, we can not take a photo because we think that it is impolite if we bother the other library's visitors with taking a photo.

We wish all the students will perform activities such as in the number 1,2,and 5.
If we all do those things, it is possible that we would be more qualified.

But events such as in the number 3 and 4 are not entirely the students' fault, why professors or lecturer rarely go to class? why until the 3rd week we still do not have a class about the "Belajar dan pembelajaran" lesson?

Hopefully between students and lecturers have a good relationship, so that the learning process can run well.
